Android app development – Indispensable for companies in Germany

Android is the leading app ecosystem in Germany. According to Statista, Android had a market share of 63.4% (measured by smartphone sales) in the period from October to December 2023. Creating apps for Android therefore offers companies and start-ups the opportunity to reach a very large target group. Developing an Android app can therefore be an important building block in a company's digital strategy.

Android

Kotlin, Flutter or React Native? Popular Android app programming languages

Java has long been the development standard for Android apps. In recent years, however, Java has been increasingly replaced by modern programming languages and frameworks. First and foremost is the programming language Kotlin, which is officially supported by Google, but Flutter and React Native are also widely used cross-platform frameworks in Android app development and are often preferred for efficient development.

Kotlin

Kotlin: Best performance for applications designed for performance

Kotlin is Google's favorite programming language for app development. Kotlin was originally developed by JetBrains in close collaboration with Google. In 2019, Google made Kotlin the official programming language for native Android apps. For very demanding apps, native development with Kotlin offers the best performance and the smoothest user experience. Kotlin runs on the same runtime as Java and is therefore fully interoperable. This means that Java-based code can be called in Kotlin (and vice versa).

Flutter

Flutter: Good performance and UI components

Flutter is a cross-platform framework with Android support from Google. Because the underlying Dart code is compiled to native code and because it has a dedicated rendering engine similar to video games, it is on par with Kotlin in terms of performance. It comes with a high-quality user interface component library in the style of Material UI, which is particularly advantageous for prototyping and apps with a material look. The approach of delivering its own rendering engine makes it possible to easily deliver Flutter apps to multiple platforms, but also means that Flutter apps may behave slightly differently to Kotlin apps. The underlying programming language Dart is not widely used outside the Flutter ecosystem.

React Native

React Native: A cross-platform framework with decisive practical advantages

React Native is another cross-platform framework for app development. Apps developed in React Native can be used on almost all platforms such as iOS, Android, Web, Windows, macOS and even tvOS.

Unlike Flutter, React Native has platform-specific layout engines that compose the user interface from the same native components as Kotlin apps. As a result, React Native apps are indistinguishable from them and integrate particularly easily with third-party code. This is a particular advantage if the time and cost benefits of cross-platform development are to be used, but the implementation of the user interface needs to be of the highest quality.

Many large companies such as Microsoft, Shopify, Discord, Coinbase, Tesla and Facebook rely on React Native for app development.

Which framework is best suited to your app project therefore depends entirely on your wishes and goals. As an app agency, we have extensive experience with all three frameworks.

Android Development: How to create an Android app

The development of an Android app can be divided into six phases. You can find a detailed overview of these phases on our page about app development. Here is a brief summary:

Concept phase: In this phase, a needs and market analysis is carried out. This determines which functions the planned app should have, which target groups should be addressed and which platforms should be served.

Technology selection: Now it is decided which framework is best suited for Android app programming. There are several ways to develop an Android app: Kotlin, Flutter or React Native are the most widely used frameworks.

App UI/UX design: In parallel, our design team works with you to develop an intuitive and user-centered user interface. The design and user experience are absolutely crucial for the success of an Android app.

Android app programming: Development begins with a proof of concept, which is essentially an interactive prototype, followed by the front-end and back-end development of the app.

Test phase: Usability tests and functional tests ensure that the Android app works as desired at launch and behaves as expected on a range of devices.

App publication and maintenance: Android apps can be published either via the Google Play Store or, in the case of company apps, via MDM (Mobile Device Management) or as a download. The waiting times for the release of new apps or for app updates are generally much shorter in the Google Play Store than when publishing in the Apple App Store. Once an app has been published, continuous maintenance and updating is necessary in order to be able to respond to Android updates and user feedback.

The advantages of working with an Android app agency

Developing an Android app is a complex process that requires technical know-how, creativity and a deep understanding of user needs. In practice, a team of specialized experts is therefore required for more complex apps that not only provide a good user experience, but also meet the highest standards in terms of data protection, security and integration with existing IT systems. As Berlin's leading app agency, we have extensive experience as an Android app agency, iOS app agency, web app agency and in hybrid and cross-platform app development.

We can support you in all phases of Android app development and look forward to learning more about your Android app project.
